Wig Products Have Various Safety Risks

"As most wig manufacturers do not follow national standards, their quality has potential safety hazards." To avoid potential harm, the Sichuan Administration for Market Regulation conducted safety risk monitoring on wig products, discovering various risks, and reminded consumers to purchase carefully according to the "early detection, early warning, early handling" risk control requirements.

Wigs are artificial imitation hair, classified by function into wigs, hair pieces, hair extensions, and accessories; and by material into full human hair, chemical fiber, and human-chemical fiber blend products. Risk monitoring found wig products have potential unsafe factors in several areas: formaldehyde, pH value, heavy metals, color fastness to water and sweat, and warning labels.

Regarding formaldehyde and pH value risks, some manufacturers use inferior dyes or substandard production processes, failing to wash residues before styling, resulting in excessive formaldehyde and pH levels. This can cause respiratory discomfort or skin allergies for wearers.

Regarding heavy metal risks, extractable heavy metals (arsenic, lead, mercury) in hair dyes can migrate into the body through sweat and accumulate to harm health.

Regarding color fastness risks, poor fastness to water and sweat can cause wigs to fade from sweat and rain during use, easily staining skin and clothes. Severe fading may trigger skin allergies or other discomfort.

Regarding manufacturing and warning labels, most wigs lack relevant product information, preventing consumers from properly learning usage and care methods, potentially leading to harm.

The Sichuan Administration recommends consumers purchase from reputable channels and avoid unbranded products without material/content labels, specifications, manufacturer details, or care instructions. Also inspect and avoid products with uneven hair thickness, odors, discoloration, and shedding.

Before use, soak and air dry new wigs with water or neutral detergent, or have them professionally cleaned to reduce harm. Clean and store wigs properly after wearing, keeping storage spaces ventilated. Discontinue use if mold or odors occur. Stop immediately if discomfort arises and seek medical advice as needed.
